Residential Remodeling Contractor – The Right Questions to Ask

Hiring a residential remodeling contractor may seem like a daunting task. You may not fully understand what to ask a remodeling contractor to find the right match for you. Below are some of the questions you need to ask to make sure you wind up with the best contractor possible and a remodeling project you can be proud of.

  1. How long has the residential remodeling contractor been in business? This question will tell you something about how much experience the company has. Not that you shouldn’t use a new company, but if the company you’re thinking about using has been in business a long time it shows that people are most likely happy with their services. The ideal company to work with would have 4 or 5 years of experience in the remodeling business. If they are still functioning after this heavy recession we’ve recently been through, chances are they know exactly what they’re doing.
  2. What exactly are their rates? It’s extremely important for them to be able to state exactly what their rates are. For example, if they can’t give you an exact price on what things will cost, it’s not a good idea to work with them as they may try to price gouge you later. That pricing should be presented in an Estimate along with a understandable list or “scope” of the work to be done.
  3. Ask them to tell you the solutions to your problems up front. A seasoned remodeling contractor should be able to tell you in your first meeting exactly what needs to be done to remodel your home. If they can’t, they may not have enough experience and you might want to look elsewhere for a contractor.
  4. Ask how much experience individual employees have. It’s always good to go with a residential remodeling contractor that is stacked with experienced employees. Don’t become their “learning experience”.

These important questions can save you a lot of time and money when looking to hire a residential remodeling contractor.
